...to the Harvest Moon Campaign World. This campaign is mainly high-fantasy as most Dungeons & Dragons campaigns often are, however it does have a strong Gaslight tendencies and even Steampunk. As was described on the Home Page, this is a world much like our own. In fact it is our world, yet set far in the future, some three thousand years after a great apocalypse swept over the face of the Earth before it was plunged into centuries of darkness. Today, the people of the world have developed new societies for themselves, and faced whole new challenges. They use a strong, finely-honed wit to meet the struggles of daily life with intelligence and perseverance.
The people of Harvest Moon are actually quite practical about magic and technology. This Campaign World is only grudgingly defined as partially Steampunk. Some advances have been made in steam engines, but that kind of technology often takes a backseat to more practical applications whenever they are called for. Harvest Moon also differs from other Gaslight campaigns in that there is a wide use of magic and it is not usually distrusted. However, the people do not use it for every task. For example, the nations of Quenecias and Fozlebelden have developed a steam rail system which uses coal and charcoal to heat its boilers. At the same time, magic is used throughout the world to make people's lives easier. In Panaecia and Jerusalem, for example, magic is used for such mundane tasks as cleaning the streets or reinforcing walls.
Magic and technology aren't the only things the people of Harvest Moon can boast. They have grown out of their own Dark Times to develop some of the most advanced societies the world has ever seen. In Quenecias, Dragonkeep, and Panaecia equal rights and freedom for all sentients is a strong value. This strong philosophy has provided the building-blocks for sharing of cultural beliefs and ideas. It is easily the most prosperous area of the world. Other parts of the globe, sadly, pale in comparison. Some places are still rough around the edges, such as the city of Hallow's Breeze which seems to float like a huge, phantom ship on an ocean of grassland. Brittannia, Ur, and Torkash are still very male-centered and distrustful of non-humans. The great, recently-unified nation of Nebushiresu has emerged from a long civil war which involved powerful outside forces and its society is still reforming itself.
As far as religious beliefs go, the people of Harvest Moon can be quite devout in their worship of the gods. Many priests have the ability to channel energy granted to them by the gods who are fabled to have been mortals once, and led the people in the world out of the Dark Times.
Indeed, the City of Jerusalem was raised from the rubble, it's roaming undead were cast out, and was re-established by priests. The city has been a center for both conflict and innovation for centuries since.
The Earth itself and the arrangement of the heavens only vaguely resemble what they once were. During the apocalypse, worlds were thrown about in the heavens and continents and seas wrenched with the forces of nature. There are rarely dark nights on Earth during the 57th century; both Luna and Jupiter hang in the sky at one time or another, not to mention the bright globe of Europa.
The Harvest Moon Campaign also boasts a new and highly customizable character creation and advancement system. Although standard d20 rules are still used during game-play, characters are created piece by piece, with little regard to the more stringent 3.5-edition character classes. All character abilities are chosen individually by the player and advance in the same way. Every character is unique. There are a myriad of house rules, feats, spells, and much more which can easily be modified for your campaign. You are free to use any content you see here for your own campaign as long as you do not sell it or distribute it as your own work.
This Campaign World is a culmination of nearly a decade of play. It has evolved almost like a living organism from the minds of the dungeon master and the players, working together to weave a sweeping epic that one man could never tell. We have had players and characters of all varieties walking the streets and fording the rivers of Harvest Moon. We've made great friends and lost some along the way. One thing is for sure is that we'll keep exploring Harvest Moon for years to come.
